After a long check in, we were more than ready to get off DT and start exploring Taroa. The island had played a big role during the Second World War. The Japanese built two runways and stationed over 3000 troops on the islands. There are a lot of reminders of this occupation, with spent shells, live ammunition and rusted guns littering the shore line. Inland there are wrecked airplanes and remains of bunkers and buildings.
